Getting started

There is nothing to set up and no account to create. Tap Get started on the welcome screen and you land on Today. If you like, add your name in Settings so Today can greet you. Open Settings from the round avatar at the top of Today.

On phones, the bottom bar has Today, Journal, Insights and Report, and a button to log a migraine: + on iPhone, Log migraine or + on Android. On iPad, Android tablets and unfolded foldables, the same sections are in a sidebar, with Log migraine at the bottom.

AuraTrace follows your device's light or dark setting automatically.

Logging a migraine

Logging takes four short steps and about 10 seconds:

  1. Intensity: move the slider from 1 to 10 until the orb matches how it feels. 1 to 3 is Mild, 4 to 6 Moderate, 7 to 8 Severe and 9 to 10 Intense.
  2. Timing: pick when it started: Just now, 30 min ago, 1 hour ago, This morning, Overnight, or Pick a time for an exact date and time. Still going is on by default. Turn it off to enter when it ended. Turn on Aura first? if you had zigzags, flashes or blind spots before the pain.
  3. Triggers: tap anything that might have set it off. You can pick as many as you like, or none.
  4. Details: optionally add symptoms, relief taken and notes.

Tap Save entry on the last step. Timing has a sensible default and triggers and details are optional, so on a bad day you can tap Continue through them and fill in the rest later.

When a migraine is still going

If you left Still going on, Today shows Migraine in progress. When it passes, tap It ended to set the end time to now, or tap Details and edit the entry to set a different end time.

Editing and deleting entries

Open the Journal and tap an entry to see its details. Tap Edit to change anything, including the start and end time, then Save changes. To remove an entry, tap Delete and confirm.

Use the filters at the top of the Journal to find an entry: All, With aura, Severe 7+ and Last 30 days. Editing and deleting always work, with or without Plus.

Triggers

AuraTrace starts with twelve common triggers: Poor sleep, Stress, Caffeine, Screen time, Dehydration, Weather change, Alcohol, Skipped meal, Bright light, Hormonal, Loud noise and Strong smell.

  • Add your own while logging, with Add your own trigger on the triggers step, or in Settings under Your triggers. It is selected right away and appears in every future entry.
  • Remove a trigger in Settings, under Your triggers. Past entries keep the trigger name they were saved with, so your history and reports stay accurate.

Triggers you pick are possible triggers. AuraTrace counts how often each one comes before a migraine, which can help you and your doctor spot patterns over time.

Insights and patterns

Insights shows your episodes, average severity, average duration and how often you had an aura, plus a severity trend, migraines per month, when they start on a 24 hour clock, which weekdays hit hardest and a trigger ranking. Pick 30 days, 3 months, 6 months or All time at the top.

Patterns get clearer with every entry. The severity trend appears once you have logged at least two migraines in the selected range, and the Pattern spotted card on Today appears once your recent entries include triggers.

The PDF report

  1. Open Report.
  2. Choose the time period: 30 days, 3 months, 6 months or All time.
  3. Under Include, enter the patient name if you want it on the report, and choose whether to include Charts and trends, Relief taken and Personal notes.
  4. Tap the page or Preview to check it.
  5. Tap Export PDF and choose where to send it in the share sheet: email, messages, files, a printer or another app.

The file is called AuraTrace Report.pdf. It is always printed on white, uses US Letter or A4 paper depending on your region, and includes an overview, an episode log and lines for your doctor to sign. If you leave the patient name empty, the report says "Not provided".

The report is created on your device and is not uploaded anywhere by AuraTrace. It contains health information, so share it with care.

Free trial and Plus

Every feature is free for 7 days. The trial starts when you save your first entry, not when you install the app. During the trial, Today shows how many days are left. Nothing is charged when it ends.

After the trial, AuraTrace Plus keeps everything unlocked. Choose Monthly at $2.99 per month, Yearly at $19.99 per year, or Lifetime at $29.99 once. Prices are in US dollars, and Apple or Google show the local price for your country before you buy. To see the plans, open Settings and tap AuraTrace Plus.

Your journal is never held hostage. Without Plus you can always open, read, edit and delete your entries, mark an ongoing migraine as ended and use Settings. Logging new entries, Insights and the PDF report are part of Plus.

Restoring purchases

AuraTrace checks your purchases every time it opens, so Plus usually turns on by itself. If it does not, for example on a new device:

  1. Make sure you are signed in to the same Apple Account (iPhone and iPad) or Google account (Android) that you used to buy Plus.
  2. Open Settings in AuraTrace and tap AuraTrace Plus.
  3. Tap Restore at the bottom of the plans screen.

Purchases belong to the store you bought from. Plus bought on the App Store does not carry over to Android, and Plus bought on Google Play does not carry over to iPhone or iPad. If the store is not available, AuraTrace says "The store is not available right now. Please try again later." Check your connection and try again.

Managing or cancelling a subscription

Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. When you cancel, Plus stays active until the end of the period you already paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Lifetime is a one time purchase and never renews.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions, then AuraTrace.
  3. Choose another plan, or tap Cancel Subscription.

With an active subscription, you can also tap Manage subscription in AuraTrace's Settings to open the same screen.

On Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions, then AuraTrace.
  3. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the steps.

With an active subscription, Manage subscription in AuraTrace's Settings opens the same page.

Refunds

Refunds are handled by the store. On the App Store, request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. On Google Play, see the Google Play refund policies. We never receive your payment details, so we cannot refund purchases directly.

Moving to a new phone

AuraTrace keeps your journal only on your device. There is no account or cloud sync, so there is no AuraTrace login that brings your data along. Here is what you can do:

  • iPhone to iPhone or iPad: set up the new device from an iCloud Backup, a computer backup or Quick Start. App data is usually included, depending on your settings.
  • Android to Android: AuraTrace supports Android Auto Backup and device to device transfer, so your journal can come along when you set up the new phone with your Google account, if backup is turned on.
  • Keep a record: export a PDF report with All time before you switch, so you always have a copy of your history.
  • Plus: restore it on the new device with Restore, using the same store account.

Switching between iPhone and Android does not carry over your journal or your Plus purchase.

Deleting your data

To delete one entry, open it in the Journal and tap Delete.

To start over, open Settings and tap Delete all data, then confirm. Every episode is removed and your triggers go back to the twelve built in ones. Your name, your report options and the trial start date are kept. This cannot be undone.

Uninstalling the app also removes its data from the device. Earlier device backups may still contain it until they are replaced or deleted. We never receive your data, so there is nothing to delete on our side. See the privacy policy for details.

A note about your health

AuraTrace is a journal, not a medical device. It does not diagnose or treat anything, and a trigger that shows up often is a pattern worth discussing, not a diagnosis. Bring your report to your doctor and decide on treatment together.

If you have a sudden, severe or unusual headache, or symptoms that worry you, contact a doctor or emergency services right away. Please be gentle with yourself.

Still need help?

Write to us and include your device model and the app version from the bottom of Settings. Please do not send health details we do not need. We read every message.
